Jessica J. 1st yr medical student Nick is one of the major reasons I am in medical school today. As a first-generation college and medical student, my journey to become a doctor was daunting and unfamiliar. However, since my freshman year of undergrad, Nick has poured his heart into ensuring my success, preparation, and confidence as a medical student today. Nick understood not only my circumstances but also, most importantly, me. He genuinely asked about my unique background, aspirations, and trepidations and tailored his advice to fit my needs and desires. His efforts to guarantee my success were relentless and remarkable. Beyond practical advice on course selection, he has granted me my MCAT prep books, connected me with possible research opportunities, critiqued my AMCAS application, and performed several medical school mock interviews. It is difficult to captivate my gratitude for Nick, but I am forever thankful to him for being the best mentor I could ask for. Anyone would be lucky to have Nick in their corner.

As a first-generation college student, Nick really made me feel like I belonged in medicine. As many pre-med students tend to experience, I struggled with a lot of self doubt during my application process. Nick helped me realize that I have so much more to offer than my GPA and MCAT scores. This is something that I have carried with me throughout medical school and even encourage for other students as well. He also reminded me how special and important it was to be a Latina pre-med student, which has enhanced my passion for increasing diversity in medicine. While I was in medical school, he reached out to me to coordinate a three-part Latinx pre-med workshop. It is very obvious that he cares and is passionate about increasing the Latinx representation in medicine. He was an amazing pre-med advisor and has served as a mentor for me even beyond college.

Mr. Nick Celedón is someone who was with me every step of the way in my pre-health journey. If it was not for him constantly pushing me to not only be the best applicant I can, but giving me the hope and motivation to achieve whatever I can, I wouldn't be where I am now. He is one of the nicest and most genuine people I have ever met, and has shown me time and time again how he not only cares for me but for his students, and wants the absolute best for them. I am grateful to have someone like Mr. Celedón to have been there through the process, and also been a great friend throughout my journey.

As a DACA recipient and first-generation student, my aspiration to matriculate into medical school felt like a dream. It wasn’t until my first undergraduate semester that I crossed paths with Nick Celedón, a mentor who has become an instramental figure in transforming my dream into a tangible goal.
